Dark, Porter & Stout
Porters are dark beers with a long, rich history. The name comes from the fact that porters were very popular with port workers in London in the 19th century. They were robust and warming beers, with big chocolate and coffee aromas and flavours said to give the labourers strength. Stouts first came about as "stout porters", and were simply more alcoholic versions of porters, but the name was adopted over in Ireland shortened to stout, making the distinction between the two tricky. Generally porters have more dark fruit to them, while stouts exhibit big roasted malt and bitter characteristics. Either way, they are both fantastic winter beers to have with hearty roast dinners and meats.
